This Week's Update [12/28/14] - Merry Christmas

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

We had a very nice Christmas.  I was a little disappointed because the rest of the gang refused to wear the reindeer antlers, Santa, and elf hats for the family photo, but the picture turned out nice anyway.  :-)

It has also been very nice to be home for what seems like a long break from work.  I worked Monday and Tuesday and have been home since.  Steve and Matthew will probably be very glad when I go back to work late next week as I've used all my excess time doing some much needed cleaning around the house.

We've also been able to ride every day.  Miles for the week are 90, miles for 2014 are 3217, and total miles are 12,217.

Take care,

Zelma

This Weeks Update [11/30/14] - Lots to be Thankful For

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!  We enjoyed ours.  Roger and Becky came to visit for several days and Becky, Steve, and I enjoyed making some old favorite recipes and added some new ones to our favorites list.  We enjoyed traditional wild turkey on Thanksgiving (courtesy of Roger's hunting trip) and Friday we had a progressive appetizer dinner where we spent the afternoon making [and eating] a series of munchies.  :-)

It was nice to have Matthew home from school, but he was working most of the time on end-of-semester assignments (he apparently has the joy this semester of many professors assigning 1/2 the work for the semester in the last 3 weeks).

We missed seeing Mike, Sarah, and Olivia because Mike had to work the holiday.  Sarah has been keeping Grandpa up to date - including Olivia's latest accomplishment of walking.  I think Sarah and Mike better savor the last few days they have before Olivia is fully mobile and running around the house.

We spent more time cooking this week than biking so miles for the week are 25, miles for 2014 are 2,989, and total miles are 11,989.

Take care,

Zelma

This Week's Update [1/19/14] - Happy Birthday Steve :-)

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

It was a good week.  Tuesday we celebrated Steve's birthday.  He got his 3rd annual photo book.  This year's book features a great picture of Steve and Olivia on the cover.

In addition to cards and well wishes, he was serenaded with Happy Birthday by Sue and Ron via Skype and got a special Happy Birthday video featuring Olivia.

We have had a break in the weather so Saturday we went to Victor to check on Steve's house and check on the renovation progress.  Dean [Locke Contruction] has done an awesome job and the inside is pretty much finished.  We also got to visit with Bud and Nancy while we were there and catch up on things.

This week, winter is expected to return in full force with extreme cold mid-week.   Matthew is also getting ready to go back to college for the spring semester.

Miles for the week are 76, miles for 2014 are 243 and total miles are 9,243.

Take care,

Zelma

This Week's Update [1/5/14] - A Little "Excitement" to End 2013

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

I'll just start the note by saying all is fine with GJ.

We did have some anxious moments on New Year's Eve afternoon.  It was a reasonably decent day (by Rochester standards) and we had decided to go and do a little "girl's afternoon out" browsing at the mall.  Our outing was quickly cut short when GJ lost her balance getting on the escalator at Macy's and fell backwards striking her head.  It was just like you see in the movies where it seems like everything was moving in slow motion but probably happened in a matter of seconds.

Someone got the escalator stopped and we were fortunate to have two people there almost immediately that knew how to assess the situation and what to do (a former EMT and a nurse).  They made sure her head and neck were stabilized and started through the first response triage list and waited with her on the escalator until the EMT's and ambulance arrived.  Because there was a chance of neck / spinal injury - she had to be placed on a backboard with neck collar for transfer to the emergency room.

Given how long things can sometimes be, it was a reasonably short stay in emergency (a little over 4 hours).  They ran a series of tests to make sure nothing was damaged during the fall and confirmed there were not any other medical related issues.

We picked up Matthew on the way home so that he could stay at GJ's house overnight and we had our New's Year's Eve pizza party.  We are very fortunate that we can joke about having our mother-daughter bonding time at the ER instead of the mall.

Steve and I did finish our 2013 riding goal - making 3,800 miles for the year and 9,000 total miles since Steve's surgery.  We are wearing the new jersey's we got for Christmas from Becky and Roger in the photo.

Miles for the week are 92, miles for 2014 are 63 and total miles are 9,063.  Guess our next milestone will be 10K!  :-)

Looking forward to a great 2014.

Take care,

Zelma
