This Weeks Update [12/27/15] - Merry Christmas

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

Steve, Matthew and I got into the Christmas spirit this week by doing a Santa puzzle which was an early gift from Ron and Sue.

Since the time lapse Christmas tree decorating was such a big hit, Steve did a time lapse of us building the puzzle.

For a larger view, here is a link to the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mi-u7O0c1E&feature=share.  He makes it look simple and quick. :-)

Today we headed to see Mike, Sarah and Olivia.  Olivia is now the newest Trek bike rider in the family with a bike picked specially by Papa.  [This is the 10th Trek bicycle in the extended family: a 1981 steel model 412, two Navigators now on trainers, four Fx fitness bikes, two Domane 4.3s and Olivia's Mystic 12.]

Miles for the week are 66, miles for 2015 are 3,284, and total miles are 15,538.

This Weeks Update [12/20/15] - Headed to Christmas Break

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

Work has been extra crazy with lots of deadlines and unplanned curve balls which has put a delay in getting things done for Christmas. We finally got the Christmas tree put up this week.  Steve did another cool time-lapsed video of the decorating.  Here are the "elves" in action.

Writing out Christmas cards will be tonight  (thank goodness for 1-hour photo cards).

I am so looking forward to having some time off at home for the holidays.  The best thing about Valeant is that everything is stopping on the 23rd, not to resume until the 4th so it should hopefully be an uninterrupted break. :-)

Looks like the weather is going to continue to be good and we are planning to head to see Sarah, Mike, and Olivia during the break as well.

Congratulations to Matthew - fall grades are in and he has made the Presidents High Honor Roll again.  He has also been making good use of the time to work on his thesis.  I am sure his time at home is going to fly by.

Steve and I had another puzzle marathon Friday night / Saturday - this was a Christmas gift from Sue.  The puzzles that are real photos are definitely more challenging than the folk art prints.

We've been continuing to ride inside.  Miles for the week are 65, miles for 2015 are 3,218, and total miles are 15,472.

Take care and have a wonderful Christmas.

This Weeks Update [12/13/15] - Matthew Home for Winter Break!

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

After a busy week of final exams and finishing up term papers, I picked up Matthew Friday afternoon to come home for winter break. Not sure where all the time has gone the last 3 1/2 years but the only thing standing between him and graduation in May is completing his Honor undergraduate thesis.  He will be working on that full time during the break with the goal to complete his first full draft before returning to campus late January.

We have had unseasonably pleasant weather (40's and 50's) for all of December - much better than last year when I went to pick Matthew up in a blizzard and ended up staying the night in Oswego.  It would have been warm enough to attempt riding outside a few days except for the wind.  We look like we are going to have similar weather this week as well.

We are continuing to ride inside and have a stockpile of new puzzles to do.  Matthew helped us with the one we did over the weekend.

Miles for the week are 52, miles for 2015 are 3,153, and total miles are 15,407.

This Weeks Update [12/6/15] - Great News!

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

We got wonderful news at Steve's oncology appointment.  The radiation treatment had the desired effect on the one lesion in his liver and no signs of any new progression elsewhere.  We get another 4 months off from appointments!

We have another new puzzle picture to share and continued riding.

Miles for the week are 78, miles for 2015 are 3,101, and total miles are 15,355.

This Week's Update [11/29/15] - Happy Thanksgiving!

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

It was a very nice week.  I had a couple of days off work, Matthew was home from school, Roger and Becky came for a visit, and we had lots of great things to eat for Thanksgiving!

The weather was relatively mild (not quite warm enough to ride outside - but we did take a walk after Thanksgiving dinner.)

Steve had his CT scan on Monday.  We get the results this next Tuesday.  Will keep everyone posted on the results.

Although Matthew had a lot of school work to do over the long weekend it was nice to have him home.  He went back today for one more week of classes and then finals week.

We were also able to rope Roger, Becky, and GJ into a Thanksgiving puzzle.  It was probably the most difficult one we have done so far as the picture on the box was too small to see the level of detail on the pieces that was required to assemble it.

We didn't take a special picture because we were riding inside, but we did cross the 3,000-mile mark for the year.  Miles for the week are 52, miles for 2015 are 3,023, and total miles are 15,277.

Take care,

Zelma

This Week's Update [11/22/15] - Getting Ready for Thanksgiving Cooking

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

The days seem to be getting shorter at a very rapid rate.  I looked out the window at 5:15 this evening and it was close to complete darkness with a nearly full moon. :-(

Steve and I did another puzzle marathon on Friday night - picture attached.  Both of us have a hard time stopping even when it is really late.  We did end up having to give up and finish this on Saturday morning.

Steve has his next CT scan tomorrow and we'll get the results on 12/1.

We are looking forward to Thanksgiving.  Roger and Becky are coming for a visit and Becky and I have all sorts of things planned to cook.  Matthew will be home from college on Tuesday evening.  He'll then have another 2 weeks and then be home for Christmas.

Miles for the week are 66, miles for 2015 are 2,971 and total miles are 15,225.

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

We wrapped up our visit with the kids and returned home on Monday. After having been off for a few days work was crazy - so there were a couple of days I got home too late to ride.  However, it apparently wasn't too late to start a puzzle :-)  (Not the best idea on a weeknight).  This one reminded me of the old time boats and lodges from the Adirondacks.

This Week's Update [11/8/15] - Some Big Milestones!

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

We had a really wonderful week!!!  We were surprised with a couple of days of Indian summer and were able to enjoy riding outside on the canal in near 70-degree weather.

We also marked a major milestone of 5 years since Steve's cancer surgery.  We have been so lucky to have so many skilled medical experts to help him over the years and also appreciate all the support from our family and friends.

We also got to spend the weekend with Sarah, Mike and Olivia and help celebrate Olivia's 2nd birthday today!!!  Life is good.  :-)

Miles for the week are 43, miles for 2015 are 2,866 and total miles are 15,120.

Take care,

Zelma

[Also, too I created a collection of videos and photos of Olivia's first two years.  The video is better in HD and fullscreen.  It's a little long, so get your beverage of choice and sit back and enjoy.]

This Weeks Update [11/1/15] - Getting Ready to Go See Olivia

(The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.)

Hi all,

We had a pretty quiet week.  I was under the weather with a cold and now GJ has one as well.  So far Steve has avoided it.

We started another puzzle last night while waiting for the Trick or Treater's to come by.  [It was a nice evening and we had almost 120 trick-or-treaters, which is the most in long time.]  It is addictive - finally about 1 am I had to give up and get some sleep, but we did finish it this morning.  It's a fall theme Charles Wysocki print with lots of pumpkins.

We are getting very excited because later this week we are heading down to celebrate Olivia's second birthday!!!  Papa has been working on a special video for her.

Miles for the week are 40, miles for 2015 are 2,823 and total miles are 15,077.

This Week's Update [10/25/15] - Another Milestone!

(The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.)

Hi all,

We had a good week.  The only thing that could have made it better would have been a ride outside.  On Thursday, we hit the 15,000 mile mark on the trainers.

Steve got us badges for our Road ID's to celebrate the milestone. The last two milestones, he had custom engraved stem caps - but we have run out of bikes to put them on. :-)

This weekend, GJ and I headed to Oswego to enjoy spending time with Matthew at our last Friends and Family Weekend (aka Parent's weekend). We enjoyed it - still not sure how the last 4 years could have gone by so quickly.

Miles for the week are 78, miles for 2015 are 2,782 and total miles are 15,037.

This Week's Update [10/18/15] - Winding Down on Outside Riding

(The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.)

Hi all,

We are getting to the time of the season where outside rides are getting scarce.  We keep a close eye on the weather forecast to make sure we catch them.  We were lucky on Monday and had a really nice warm day - so I left work early so we could get in a 16-mile ride (round trip to the Brockport bridge).

The rest of the week has been too cold to ride and there is a chance of snow in the forecast for today.

Miles for the week are 80, miles for 2015 are 2,705 and total miles are 14,959.

This Week's Update [10/11/15] - Great Visit with Ron and Sue

( The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.)

Hi all,

We had a good week and even better weekend.  Steve's sister Sue and her husband Ron arrived on Friday for the weekend.  Steve has been keeping us all well fed.  Steve, Sue and myself had a marathon puzzle building event.  We started it on Saturday afternoon and finished it when we got up this morning.

The weather was also nice.  Today we had planned to bike but there were wind gusts > 20 mph so instead we enjoyed relaxing on the deck in the sunshine.

Miles for the week are 51, miles for 2015 are 2,625, and total miles are 14,879.

( The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.)

Hi all,

Monday we said good bye to the kids and headed home.  It was a nice visit and we are already looking forward to going back at the beginning of November for Olivia's 2nd birthday.

We got our first full week of fall weather and it was too cool to ride outside so all the miles for the week were inside miles.  We hope that there will be another break in the weather and that we can sneak in a few more outside [rides] before winter is completely here.

Miles for the week are 78, miles for 2015 are 2,574 and total miles are 14,828.

This Week's Update [9/20/15] - Wonderful Fall Weather Today

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

Steve finished his radiation treatment on Wednesday.  Compared with all the previous treatments, the side effects proved to be minor. The PA said the fatigue may take a few weeks to get over, but Steve felt good enough to bike at the end of the week and we had a wonderful ride on the canal today.  It was a perfect fall day - sunny and cool enough to wear our long sleeve jerseys, but warm enough not to need our jackets.

I did pick up a new distraction while Steve was having treatment. They had jigsaw puzzles to work on while you wait and Steve and I enjoyed working them.  I can't remember the last time I had done a puzzle, but we ordered a few from Amazon.  The puzzles arrived today and we started the first one....after riding we sat down to work on it some more and it is so addicting, we ended up finishing it.

Miles for the week is 36, miles for 2015 is 2,450 and total miles is 14,704.

Take care,

Sunglasses for Aging Cyclists

Sometime around the age of 40, most people begin to suffer from presbyopia.  Your eyesight is fine, but your arms are too short to read the newspaper or phone book.  (If you are old enough to remember when both of those were commonly read, you probably need some help with the small print.)

My first glasses were bifocals, which I got sometime in my early forties.  Other than presbyopia, I only have a slight astigmatism in my distance vision.

Even if you don't need glasses for cycling or other outdoor activities, if you have presbyopia it's nice to have some help in reading a cycle computer, mobile phone, menu or cue sheet (if you do an organized ride).

When we first started cycling on a regular basis, I used my regular prescription glasses which had magnetic "clip-on" sunglasses.

These worked fine for two reasons.  They were fairly large and and we were riding in a fairly upright position.  But when I got new more stylish and smaller glasses, I found myself looking over the top of the glasses while on the bike.

Prescription bifocal cycling glasses start at a couple hundred dollars and go to several hundred dollars for Oakley or Rudy Project models.  And there is always the risk of loss or damage to eyewear when doing physical activities, so this was not a realistic option.

If you don't need distance correction for outdoor activities, safety bifocals are an inexpensive option.  These come with clear or tinted lens and cost less than $15.  I bought a couple different brands to see which fit me best and to have a spare.

The safety glasses from Dewalt seemed to fit me the best (with some modification) and I still wear the clear ones in low light conditions.  They have pretty good wrap-around coverage to keep the bugs and breeze out of your eyes.  The bridge of my nose is fairly narrow and I added the pink stick-on nose pads from the drugstore to help keep the glasses from sliding down my nose.  I trimmed the pads to fit and put a little black Sharpie on the front edges to make them less noticeable.

In the spring of 2013, I upgraded to the Dual Eyewear SL2 Pro sunglasses.  (They were $55 when I bought them, but are now $65.)  They also have less expensive models, but I bought the SL2 Pros because they have adjustable nose pads and adjustable temples to help dial in the fit.

I have been very pleased with the Dual Eyewear bifocal sunglasses and would recommend them to anyone in the market for a similar product.  In addition to "cycling/sport" models they also have "aviation" and "casual" models, and are currently having a sale on discontinued styles.

If you don't need any vision correction, both Sarah and Zelma have had very good experience with Tifosi cycling eyewear.    Zelma recently got two new pair for her birthday:  one with photochromic changeable lens, and one with three colors of interchangeable lens.  Each pair was about $70, which is a fraction of the price of a pair from Oakley or Rudy Project.

But for casual outdoor use where reading glasses are needed, it's hard to beat the price and utility of tinted bifocal safety glasses. At less than $15 you don't need to be afraid of sitting on them or losing them overboard.

Keep Moving

Optimism

Having cancer can occasionally cause me to do silly things.  Like contemplating my mortality when making insignificant purchasing decisions.

The first time I noticed this was a couple of years ago when it was time to reorder my favorite shaving soap rounds from an online boutique shop in Oregon.  Neither the product nor the shipping was really expensive, but I found myself trying optimize the cost without buying more product than I would expect to use.  I ended up getting two shaving rounds and am just now ready to start using the second one.  If I can find it.

In today's online world, I am down to two or three physical magazine subscriptions; but the same question comes up when it is time to renew.  Do I renew for multiple years to save money and risk expiring before the subscription does?  The latest decision was easy because with a one year subscription to peloton magazine for $28, I got a $25 gift card to Art's Cyclery.  I ordered some bike tools that I didn't have; and by adding in a couple more items, I got free shipping.

With the results of my most recent CT scan prompting a concentrated five-day round of radiation therapy for the liver lesion, I was presented with the question of how much bike chain lube to buy.  Many brands come in two, four and eight-ounce sizes, but my current favorite jumps from four to 16 ounces.  The per-ounce cost of the larger size is half that of the smaller one, but 16 ounces of chain lube could be enough to last a healthy low-mileage person a lifetime.

With a little encouragement from Zelma, I went for the larger size.  It will also be good to have when we tune the many bikes for Camp Abilities next summer and hopefully years into the future.

And the radiation therapy is going well, with very limited side-effects compared to chemotherapy.  It takes a few months to determine how effective the treatment has been however, so we won't know the results of the treatment until after another scan at the end of November.  We remain optimistic.

Keep Moving.

This Week's Update [9/13/15] - Off to New "Stuff"

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

We had a good week.  Steve started radiation treatment on Thursday.  While we were waiting for his appointment, Steve got this picture of Olivia for her first day of school.

We've found that a sense of humor can go a long way in the journey we've been on, so we joked about Steve doing a first-day sign for treatment.  I took Steve home after his appointment and before I had gotten packed up for work, he had his "First Day" sign ready for me to take his picture.   :-)

Steve has completed 2 of the 5 treatments.  So far compared to previous radiation and chemo, this is pretty uneventful as far as side effects.  Fatigue is one of the potential side effects, but we still rode both days this weekend (although inside because it was very rainy and cool).  The weather is supposed to be better this week, so we plan to be back out on the canal path soon.

35 miles for the week, 2,414 miles for 2015 and 14,688 total miles.

Take care,

Zelma

This Week's Update [9/6/15] - Summer Weather - Some New Treatment

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

Tuesday we got the results of Steve's most recent CT scan and there is enough recurrence on his liver that treatment is warranted.  The good news is that because of the size and location, Dr. Friedberg feels it is a good candidate to treat with radiation instead of chemo.  Wednesday we had an appointment with a radiation oncologist who specializes in this specific type of treatment.  The process delivers a high dose of radiation in a localized area over a short duration cycle (5 consecutive appointments) and the side effects are expected to be significantly less than chemo or the initial radiation that Steve had.  Treatment starts on 9/10 and will be finished on 9/16.  After treatment is completed it will be several months to assess the effectiveness.
Tentative schedule is to have a follow up CT scan and get the results in early December.

The weather has continued to be very summer like with temperatures in the mid 80's and we've been getting in a lot of good rides.  We have had the best 10 consecutive riding days so far this season with 141 miles completed.

Today, we put the bike rack on the Subaru and headed east to catch the canal path at Genesee Valley park and bike from there to Bushnell's Basin (20 miles round trip).  We had a nice leisurely ride and enjoyed stopping to watch the boats going through one on the canal locks.

Miles for the week are 88, miles for 2015 are 2,379 and total miles are 14,633.

Take care,

Zelma

This Week's Update [8/30/15] - Some Long Rides

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

We didn't get to ride many days this week, but the ones we did this weekend were awesome!  Monday, Steve had his next CT scan.  It's not exactly what you would think of, but at this point in time Steve probably has obtained platinum customer status where he goes for the test.  We always have the same staff and got express service to the front of the line on Monday.  It does help that Steve has pictures to show of Olivia.  :-)   We get the test results this Tuesday.

I had to travel for work on Tuesday / Wednesday and didn't get home until very early Thursday morning so those days were also no ride days.  We did make up for that this weekend with the best 3 consecutive days we have had riding this year (52 miles in 3 days). Steve has been talking all season about riding even further west to go to a bike shop on the canal and have ice cream.  It would have been 32 miles round trip from our house (which was unlikely to happen this season) so on Saturday, we put the rack on the car and picked up the canal path a little further west.  It was still a good 20-mile ride round trip.  The bike shop is called Trailside Bicycles in the hamlet of Hurlburton.

For those of you not familiar with New York, a hamlet is the smallest entity of a community (City->Town->Village->Hamlet).  The owner said it was his 4th year in business so he must get most of his customers from canal riders as the only other thing we heard in Hurlburton were crickets.

As you know, Steve and I have a lot of matching jerseys.   Today we wore our black and white checks - complete with matching socks Steve found for us.

Since we rode east, we double back past the stairs at the end of the ride.  My knee was bothering me a little so I stopped at the stairs and Steve rode on to make the final loop.  I had to laugh because the guy who saw me stopped at the stairs also saw Steve on the path at the village and said "There is someone just ahead of you with the same jersey."  :-)

Miles for the week are 52, miles for 2015 are 2,290 and total miles are 14,544.

Take care,

Zelma

This Week's Update [8/23/15] - Wonderful Birthday!

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

First - thank you for all the messages, cards, and well wishes for my birthday.  Steve and GJ made me a wonderful birthday dinner complete with chocolate cake.  I can't think of anything better than celebrating with GJ, Steve, and Matthew.

Today marked another milestone with Matthew heading off for his 4th year of college.

We will see what the year brings, but he's on track to graduate in May with his major in Political Science and two minors (Creative Writing and Global & International Studies). It's hard to believe - seems like we were just headed off for his freshman year.

Miles for the week are 68, miles for 2015 are 2,238, total miles are 14,492.
Also rode 50 km (my new age) this weekend.  :-)

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

We had another good week.  The weather was definitely summer-like this weekend.  Normally I don't like the wind, but I appreciated having a breeze today when we rode to Brockport (picture attached).

As much as the weather seems like summer will be here for awhile, it is winding down for Matthew.  Next weekend he heads back to college for his senior year.  The time has flown by - can't believe we are starting year 4.

GJ made lunch for Matthew and me today and surprised me with an early birthday.  Thursday will officially mark a 1/2 century.  Not sure if I am as ambitious as Steve was to ride my age on my birthday.:-)

Miles for the week are 55, miles for 2015 are 2,171, and total miles are 14,425.

Hi All,

Another week seems to have flown by.  In about 2 weeks, Matthew goes back to school - hard to believe the summer has just disappeared.

It has been probably the best weather all summer for bike riding. Today we made it all the way to Buffalo Road on our ride.  [18 miles round trip.]

Miles for the week are 81, miles for 2015 are 2,116, and total miles are 14,370.

This Week's Update [8/2/15] - Back Home

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi all,

We wrapped up our visit with Sarah, Mike and Olivia Tuesday and headed home (picture of Olivia saying good-bye to Papa included).

Wednesday I had to travel to Canada for work and the rest of the week we spent trying to get back into the regular routine.

The weather has been good with sun but not quite as hot as it was.  Matthew and I took advantage of that this weekend and spent the day at the Sterling Renaissance Festival.  We also managed to squeeze in seeing a classic comedy movie at the Eastman Museum Dryden Theater Saturday night.

Miles for the week are 48, miles for 2015 are 2,035, and total miles are 14,289.

This Week's Update [7/26/15] - Lots of Good Things

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi All,

Lots of good things happened this week.

GJ had her follow up cardiologist appointment on Friday and had a good report.  The post surgery Eco-cardiogram showed her heart function at 45% - up from 30% pre-surgery.  This was very good news because normal is considered 50-55%.

Steve signed the closing papers to make the sale of his house in Victor final late Thursday.  The process had it's ups and downs and a number of stressful moments - glad it only took about 60 days from listing to closing.

Saturday, we headed to visit Sarah, Mike, and Olivia for a long weekend, so Papa could spend some time with his most favorite girl. :-)

We also got the new jerseys Steve ordered.  They are the special Cycle the Erie Canal design which was a promotion for the Erie Canal Bike tour.  Matthew served as team photographer so that you could see the front and back.

Miles for the week are  55, miles for 2015 are 1987, and total miles are 14,241.

Take care,

Zelma

This Week's Update [7/19/15] - Mother Nature's Mood Swings

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi all,

We saw quite a diversity of weather this week - warm, cool, warm with spectacular thunder and lightening storms - not sure why these need to occur at 4 am on Saturday morning.  :-)

The week began with the Erie Canal Annual Bike Tour coming through on Monday.  This is an annual event with [600] riders starting in Buffalo and spending the week pedaling the canal all the way to Albany [about 400 total miles].  The oldest rider on this year's tour was apparently 91 - makes me feel like an underachiever.  Steve took video as riders passed by our stairs and posted it to YouTube.

Mid week the temperatures dropped way back with highs in the 60's but by the weekend it was hot and humid.  Early Saturday morning was one of the most spectacular / scary thunderstorms I've seen since I have lived in Rochester.  Growing up in the mid-west, we always had plenty of lightening storms, but they have been, until the last year, a rare occurrence in Western NY.

Picture for this week is from our ride on Saturday where we went all the way to Lyell Avenue.

Miles for the week are 79, miles for 2015 are 1,932 and total miles are 14,186.

Take care,

Zelma

This Week's Update [7/12/15] - Good Riding

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi all

It was definitely the best riding week so far this year.  There were a couple of days of rain when we rode inside but many more days of good, warm weather for riding outside. I'm finally starting to feel back in the swing of things, so on Saturday's ride we went all the way to the Brockport canal bridge (16 miles).

Miles for the week are 92, miles for 2015 are 1,853, and total miles are 14,107.

This Week's Update [7/5/15] - Nice Long Weekend

[The Weekly Update is an email that was started in the fall of 2010 to keep family and friends informed of my medical condition and has continued as a review of family activities.  Written by Zelma and edited by Steve. Working on adding past issues to the blog.]

Hi all,

We had a nice 4th of July weekend.  Friday, Steve and I went to Camp Abilities to watch the kids ride on the bikes Steve tuned up.  We caught the orange and green team at their duathlon competition (1 mile of running and 3 miles of biking).  Depending on the campers visual ability they either ride a tandem with a sighted coach or a single.  It was a lot of fun watching the kids enjoy the biking.

On Saturday, we had the first family bike ride where Matthew joined us. He rode the first 8.5 miles and then Steve and I rode on for a total of 15.8 - our longest ride so far this year.  I finally feel like I'm getting back into our old normal - which is a good reminder about why you should bike every day.

Miles for the week are 66, miles for 2015 are 1,762 and total miles are 14,016.

Take care,

Zelma
